The movie Thor: The Dark World made over $500 million domestically, but only after Disney pulled its promotional stunt of making the film into a one-hour, two-disc DVD set.

The box office was not a fluke: the film was a total flop, earning only $4.8 million domestically on a $125 million budget.

That was a low debut for the franchise, but the success of the sequel Thor: Sirens and its subsequent sequels has pushed the Thor franchise past its initial box office performance.

In fact, Thor: Asgard was the biggest-grossing Thor film ever when it debuted in 2019.

Despite its early flops, the Thor movies have now surpassed the box office earnings of Iron Man 3, Iron Man 2, Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Thor, and The Avengers.

Thor: Ragnorak will be released in theaters on July 25.
